Snowdrops – 2012
We are open for our Snowdrop days every day from Friday 10th February until Sunday 26th February 2012.
UPDATE 14TH FEBRUARY 2012 We are pleased to inform visitors that the snow has finally gone and the snowdrops are now showing and improving each day. The crocus are also starting to look good
Enjoy a walk through the garden and meadows and see the colourful displays of snowdrops, crocus and winter iris amongst winter shrubs, dogwoods, willows and hellebores. Although our oldest snowdrop planting is only 5 years old (very new in comparison to many other gardens with winter bulb walks) we have embarked on what must be one of the most ambitious bulb planting projects in the region (possibly the country). Over the last few years we have planted in excess of 50,000 bulbs in the garden, in the new woodland and on the meadow. Apart from the well known double and single varieties we have more than 25 rarer named varieties of snowdrops planted around the garden which we hope will rapidly increase over the next few years.
There are dramatic displays of winter crocus – many planted on the south west facing slopes of the hillside garden which create a beautiful display of colour against the stems of the willow and dogwoods. Last Autumn we planted an additional 14,000 crocus bulbs to add to the display and these should be looking impressive this February.
In addition we are slowly establishing new planting of Aconites both in the shelter belt in the garden and in the new woodland in the first meadow.
In the Winter Garden our hellebores and cyclamen are in their second year since planting and should be showing promise amongst the shrub plantings.
In addition we will be offering warming home made soup, freshly made cakes, tea and coffee and biscuits in the tea room.
Thursday 16 February – Growing Hellebores with Mike Kirk – we are offering a morning course about growing and enjoying these beautiful plants. The course fee of £ 15.00 includes lunch and entry to the garden. Booking is essential
